چکیده

In situ surface-sensitive x-ray diffraction and grazing incidence x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (GIXFS) methods are combined to determine the ionic distributions across the liquid/vapor interfaces of thiolatedpolyethylene-glycol–capped gold nanoparticle (PEG-AuNP) solutions. Induced by the addition of salts (i.e., Cs2SO4) to PEG-AuNPs solutions, two-dimensional hexagonal lattices of PEG-AuNPs form spontaneously at the aqueous surfaces, as is demonstrated by x-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence small-angle x-ray scattering. By taking advantage of element specificity with the GIXFS method, we find that the cation Cs+ concentration at the crystalline film is significantly reduced in parts of the PEG-AuNP film compared with that in the bulk. Dissecting colloidal stabilization factors in crowded polymer solutions by forming self-assembled monolayers on gold nanoparticles.

An ideal colloidal system should be highly stable in a diverse range of buffer conditions while still retaining its surface accessibility. We recently reported that dispersing citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in polymers, such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), can achieve such a goal because of contributions from depletion stabilization. Because AuNPs can weakly adsorb PEG to exert steric ...

Spectrophotometric Determination of 4-Hydroxy-2-mercapto-6-methylpyrimidine Based on Aggregation of Colloidal Gold Nanoparticles

We report herein the development of a highly sensitive colorimetric method for the detection of 4-hydroxy-2-mercapto-6-methylpyrimidine (MTU) which acts as an anti-thyroid drug utilizing citrate capped gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs). This thiol-containing molecule exhibits intriguing affinity with Au-NPs. The reactivity involves the displacement of the citrate shell by the thiolate shell followed ...

Synthesis, stability, and cellular internalization of gold nanoparticles containing mixed peptide-poly(ethylene glycol) monolayers.

Gold nanoparticles have shown great promise as therapeutics, therapeutic delivery vectors, and intracellular imaging agents. For many biomedical applications, selective cell and nuclear targeting are desirable, and these remain a significant practical challenge in the use of nanoparticles in vivo. This challenge is being addressed by the incorporation of cell-targeting peptides or antibodies on...

High capacity, charge-selective protein uptake by polyelectrolyte brushes.

Surface plasmon resonance was used to measure binding of proteins from solution to poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) brushes end-grafted from gold surfaces by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PDMAEMA brushes were prepared with a variety of grafting densities and degrees of polymerization. These brushes displayed charge selective protein uptake. The extent of uptake...

Interaction of proteins with linear polyelectrolytes and spherical polyelectrolyte brushes in aqueous solution.

We review recent experiments on the interaction of proteins with anionic polyelectrolytes in aqueous solution. Data from the literature demonstrate that proteins can form soluble complexes with linear polyelectrolytes even on the "wrong side" of the isoelectric point, that is, for pH values above the isoelectric point of the proteins under which the polyelectrolytes and the proteins are like-ch...
